Nature Notes 04-30-09: Transformation

Nature Notes is the brainchild of Rambling Woods who challenges us to "look at something you might never had paid attention to..a flower…a plant..an animal…What changes are taking place?..Is your garden starting to come to life again?"

I took this first photo a couple of weeks ago. It's an epimedium (aka Bishop's Hat) in our front yard. I love the delicate pink flowers.

The second photo was taken yesterday. Now the beautiful heart-shaped leaves dominate and all but hide the flowers.

I don't think I would have noticed how quickly this plant transforms if I hadn't been paying attention and photographing it.

Today's Flowers - 04-27-09

Well, it's spring and the flowers are bursting open everywhere I look. So here's a new weekly meme just for the flowers! Today's Flowers hosts and links to flowers around the world can be found here.

These tiny daisies live in our lawn and pop out and bloom in April or May.

Sometimes it looks like this in Oregon/Washington, when it isn't cloudy and rainy! This is looking northeast to Mt. St. Helens (peeking over the trees) from southeast Portland.

Ellipsis Photo Shoot and Nature Notes: Earth Day

This week Carly from Ellipsis invites us to celebrate Earth Day by showing something in the natural world that we particularly appreciate. I love living in a place where we can see sights like this on clear days; or be on a beach at the Pacific Ocean in a little over an hour. Forests, mountains, deserts, rivers, lakes, ocean beaches - we have it all here in a small circumference. I love Oregon.

Mt. Hood. Taken from Mt. Tabor - a Portland park near our house - yesterday, Tuesday April 21st.

Combining this with Michelle's Nature Notes for this week.

A to Z Challenge: the Letter Z

This meme comes from Martha at Menagerie. The idea is to shoot a photo (or more) for each letter of the alphabet; we move on to a new letter every two weeks, more or less.

We now come to the end of the alphabet - and with Z, it will be all zipped up.

I started out with a photo of something with a lot of zippers, but that seemed to be quite a common choice for Z. So since I'm typically rebellious, I give you:

...two zucchinis and a Zen book on a zafu on a zabudon with a zipper.

I don't know what this flower is -- it lives around the corner from us. I love the fuzzy stalks and sepals. If you can identify it, I'd love to know what it is!
